Scholarship Information 
for the 2007-2008 Academic Year

Unless otherwise noted, all scholarships listed are for full-time students who are Frederick County, Maryland residents and are based upon a balance of academic promise, community service, extra-curricular activities, financial need, and character.  The Community Foundation’s Scholarship Committee reviews all applications and makes its scholarship recommendations to the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees for its final approval.  All applicants are notified of the outcome by June 15th.  

 

The Derek Matthew Angel Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Jon Angel in memory of their son, with preference given to Frederick County residents studying information technology.

 

The Alliance to the Frederick County Medical Society Scholarship Fund

Founded by the Alliance to the Frederick County Medical Society for students committed to pursuing a career in a healthcare related field. 

 

The Rollins J. and Mary Marceline Atkinson Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Jones in honor of Mrs. Jones’ parents, with preference given to students pursuing a journalism degree with the intention of and commitment to writing professionally and who have published written works.  Applicants may submit copies of published written works and/or writing samples.

 

The Christopher W. Ausherman Scholarship Fund

Founded by Nancy Ramsburg O’Brien in memory of her son, with preference given to Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduates who are pursuing a career in the building trades or a related field. 

 

The Ernest W. Ausherman Scholarship Fund

Founded by Hilda Ausherman and her children in memory of their husband and father for students pursuing any major at the post-secondary institution of their choice.

 

The Bryant Aylor Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mary Ryan Reeves and Erin Aylor with gifts from colleagues and friends, with preference given to

Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating seniors pursuing art education as a profession and exhibiting artistic talent.

 

The Audrey Pressler Bauman Scholarship Fund

Founded by Stephen R. Bauman to honor his wife, a former teacher, with preference given to Frederick or Walkersville High School graduates pursuing a post-secondary degree.

 

The Glenn E. and Helen H. Biehl Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Biehl, with preference given to students enrolled at Frederick Community College.

 

The BMK Architectural Scholarship Fund

Founded by BMK Architecture PC for Frederick, Carroll or Washington County graduating seniors planning to attend a four-year college with preference given to those studying architecture or a related design field.

 

The Dr. Ulysses G. Bourne, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. I. Blanche Bourne-Tyree in memory of her father for Frederick County Public Schools graduating seniors who will be attending a four-year college to study the sciences and are pursuing a career in healthcare with preference given to those desiring to become medical doctors.  Those aspiring to careers in the allied health professions shall also be considered.

 

The Bob and Elizabeth Boyer Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Boyer for full or part time students working full or part time residing in Frederick or Washington Counties and are pursuing careers in a health related profession, the ministry or agriculture with the intention of farming, or are working with the elderly in a direct-care or advocacy capacity.  Priority is given to those who are active in their faith, who have worked to save money to pay for college, who have volunteered in community service above the high school requirements, who are pursuing higher education to continue a career ladder, and who are non-traditional students.  Applicants must be in the lower middle income bracket or lower. 

 

The Debbie Wolfe Bradley Scholarship Fund

Founded by Jessica M. Francis, Harry H. Wolfe III, and Harry H. Wolfe IV in honor of their mother, daughter and sister for Walkersville High School graduates pursuing a career in theater arts or a related field.  Preference is given but not limited to graduating seniors who participated in theater, including Drama Club, during high school.

 

The Joseph F. Brown Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Brown in honor of Mr. Brown’s 35-year career in the land surveying business, with preference given to Middletown High School graduates studying in any of the disciplines related to land surveying such as math, physics, or geology.

 

The Brunswick Community Theater Scholarship Fund

Founded by The Brunswick Community Theater, with preference given to Brunswick High School graduates studying in any of the disciplines related to theater arts, including technical theater arts, and having a minimum 2.5 GPA at the time of application.

 

The Richard R. Burgee Memorial Scholarship Fund for Trinity United Methodist Church

Founded by Trinity United Methodist Church with memorial contributions for Mr. Burgee for students who are pursuing a post-secondary or graduate education and who are members of Trinity United Methodist Church, in Frederick, Maryland.  Preference shall be given children of the pastors of Trinity United Methodist Church.  Scholarships shall be based upon a mix of academic performance and financial need. 

 

The Ellie Byers Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Bev Shelton and Dola Burkentine in memory of their friend for students pursuing a career in public relations, marketing and advertising.

 

The Roberta Timmons Cannon Memorial Art Scholarship Fund

Founded by an anonymous lifelong Frederick County friend, with preference given to graduating seniors who wish to study the visual arts and have at least a “B” average at the time of application.

 

The Fund for Catholic Education/Kindergarten through University

Founded by Peter H. Plamondon, Sr. for students attending Mount Saint Mary’s University.

 

The Catoctin High School Youth Fund

Founded by Calvin E. Sayler with gifts from numerous others in northern Frederick County for scholarships for Catoctin High School graduates pursuing a post-secondary education at any educational setting.

 

The Catoctin Medical Center Scholarship Fund

Founded by Catoctin Medical Center, Inc. for students residing in the area served by Catoctin High School, but who are not necessarily graduates of Catoctin High School, who are pursuing a career in the medical or health fields at the trade/technical school or two- or four-year college of their choice.

 

The Brandon T. Chesnik Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his parents, Ron and Connie Chesnik, and his brother, Cameron, for Walkersville High School graduates with experience in working with youth.  Preference is given to elementary education majors.

 

The William E. Colliver Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. Colliver’s family in his memory for students who are US citizens attending University of Maryland full time at the undergraduate level and studying the health sciences or performing arts.

 

The Dr. J. Richard Crouse Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by John and Katie Fieseler and funded by family and friends for Frederick or Washington County graduating seniors accepted at University of Maryland studying medicine, dentistry or business.

 

The Sandra J. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. Leroy T. Davis in memory of his wife for students majoring in nursing or a related medical field at a University of Maryland System educational setting. 

 

The Captain John Ryan Dennison Scholarship Fund

Founded by Captain Dennison’s family for graduating seniors who are scholar/athletes, with preference given to Catoctin or Linganore High School graduates who exhibit academic promise, outstanding community service, and financial need.

           

The Disabled Citizens of Frederick County United Scholarship Fund

Founded by Disabled Citizens of Frederick County United for students who have a physical impairment that limits one or more of their major life activities as stated in the Americans with Disabilities Act with preference given to students with impaired mobility. 

 

The Dudrow Scholarship Fund                                               

Founded by Dorothy Dudrow and her children for students who are U.S. citizens, at least of sophomore standing in college at the time of application with a minimum 2.75 GPA, studying agriculture, animal sciences, botany, food sciences, human development, forestry, horticulture, natural resources management, soil conservation, and/or pre-veterinary medicine.  Preference is given to students of families deriving their income from farming or a related agricultural activity.  The scholarship will be awarded to a non-farm family if no qualified student with a farm background has applied.

 

The Dinah Duncan Memorial/Brunswick High School Bandboosters Scholarship Fund

Founded by Brunswick High School Bandboosters in memory of Mrs. Duncan for Brunswick High School graduating seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA who actively participated in marching band or color guard for a minimum of three years (transfer from other high school qualifies), including their senior year.

 

The Emmitsburg Area Endowment Fund

Founded by Emmitsburg Area Business and Professional Association for residents within the Emmitsburg zip code of 21727.

 

The Emmitsburg Lions Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Emmitsburg Lions Club and Elizabeth Prongas with memorial gifts in honor of Dr. Harry Prongas with preference given to graduating high school seniors residing in the Emmitsburg area.

 

The Engelbrecht-DeGrange Scholarship Fund                                                           

Founded by Jacob Engelbrecht in honor of his parents’ families for Frederick Community College graduates attending Hood College with a minimum 3.0 GPA and having an active interest in Frederick County history, citing volunteer work with local history/preservation organizations and/or research conducted as a part of academic coursework. The recipient need not be majoring in history on the collegiate level, but should indicate a strong and lasting interest in local history in section 12 of the application.

 

 

The Dr. Warren R. Evans/Frederick County Physical Education Teachers Scholarship Fund

Founded by Frederick County Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in honor of Dr. Evans for students majoring in recreation or health, physical or dance education. 

 

The Nancy Nicodemus Franck Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Franck for students who have graduated from a Frederick County high school and are attending Frederick Community College full-time studying elementary education.  

 

The Frederick Community College Graduate Scholarship

Founded by Donald C. Linton for Frederick Community College graduates who are continuing at a four-year college or university.

 

The Frederick Community College Graduate to Mount St. Mary’s University Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. W. Jerome Offutt for Frederick Community College graduates enrolled at Mount St. Mary’s University. 

 

The Frederick Community Concert Scholarship Fund

Founded by The Frederick Community Concert Association for graduating seniors pursuing a music career at an accredited college or university.

 

The Frederick County Agriculture Scholarship Fund

Founded by Frederick Jaycees for students who are U.S. citizens residing in Frederick County and studying any area of agriculture, animal sciences, botany, wildlife management, food sciences, home economics/human development, forestry, horticulture, natural resources management, soil conservation, pre-veterinary medicine and architecture/urban studies, with preference given to those whose families derive more than half their income from farm-related activities.  Non-traditional students must include a statement substantiating that they are over age 18 and derive over 50 percent of their income from farm related activities.

 


The Frederick County Public Schools/Ruth Gardner Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by a bequest from Ms. Gardner for Middletown High School graduating seniors with preference given to business majors.

 

The Frederick County Public Schools Donor Restricted Projects/Urbana Foundation Scholarship Fund

Founded by Natelli Communities, Inc. to support scholarships for Urbana High School graduates attending accredited two or four year colleges or universities, and/ or trade and technical schools.

 

The Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association Scholarship Fund

Founded by Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association for full time students majoring in education and committed to becoming educators.   

 

The Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association/Dr. Richard and Patricia Petre

Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. and Mrs. Richard Petre for Frederick, MD residents pursuing a college degree in education. 

 

The Frederick Medical Foundation Fund

Founded by Frederick Medical Foundation, Inc. for students majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing.

 

The Elizabeth R. Frye Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Frye for Brunswick High School graduates pursuing a career in education.

 

The Billy Gaines Athletic Excellence Fund

Founded by William and Kimberly Gaines in memory of their son for student/athletes at any point in their post-secondary academic career who participate in athletics, exhibit a good work ethic, display their spiritual beliefs in their everyday decision-making, and have overcome obstacles to achieve success.

 

The George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Freda Gilbert in memory of her husband for graduates of Frederick County Public Schools who are continuing their education at trade or technical schools.

 

The Greater Frederick Advertising Federation Scholarship Fund

Founded by Greater Frederick Advertising Federation for students pursuing a career in marketing, advertising, graphic design, public relations, communications, publishing or multi-media. 

 

The John and Ginny Greene Music Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr and Mrs. Greene for students studying music or a related field with preference given to Frederick High School graduates.

 

The C. Ray and Dorothy Barnhart Green Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Green for Catoctin High School graduates pursuing a bachelors or masters degree in the arts, the sciences, engineering or business.

 

The Esther Grinage Scholarship Fund

Founded by a bequest from Marguerite Quinn in honor of Mrs. Grinage, an early-childhood educator prior to public kindergarten, with preference to early childhood education majors.  Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study.

 

The Edward Dawson Grove, Sr. Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dawson Grove, Jr. and Susan Grove Skelly for agronomy or agriculture majors.

 

The Erma Stull Grove Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Grove for graduating seniors who participate actively in their faith, volunteer in the community and intend to major in mathematics or science. 

 

The Margaret and Robert Guyton Scholarship Fund

Founded Mr. and Mrs. Guyton, with preference given to Middletown High School graduating seniors who will be attending a trade or technical school or a certificate program of their choice.

 

The Merle L. and Ruth Rebecca Guyton Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Guyton for students demonstrating their faith through good citizenship and community service, with preference given to those majoring in the medical or law enforcement fields.  Applicants must include a recommendation from their faith leader summarizing their involvement and the reasons the applicants are worthy of the scholarship, and signed by two additional members of the applicants’ faith. 

 

The Robert G. Haas Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by the Rev. and Mrs. Theodore Haas in memory of their son for Frederick High School graduating seniors majoring in human services.

 

The James R. Hahn Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Rebecca Hahn Windsor in memory of her father for transportation majors.

 

The Hall-Buxton Educational Fund

Founded by Chandra Dawn Buxton in honor of her father, Arthur Brent Hall, and the 70th birthday of her husband, Roger Buxton, for Urbana or Damascus High School graduates with preference given to those attending a trade or technical school.  Extracurricular activities and volunteer work will not be considered.

 

The William D. Hammond Scholarship Fund

Founded by his colleagues at McLean, Koehler, Sparks & Hammond and his two sons, Philip and William, Jr., in honor of his 50-year accounting career, with preference given to accounting majors.

 

The John Franklin Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Francis E. and Edwina L. Harrison in memory of their son for Linganore High School graduating seniors, with preference given to those attending a trade or technical school and/or having learning disabilities. 

 

The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship Fund for the Arts

Founded by Barbara O’N. Clary and friends and family in honor of Ms. Heiberg’s 80th birthday for students under 25 years of age intending to pursue the arts as a career, including visual, performing, literary, or structural arts.

 

The Michael David Hendrix Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Linda Agar-Hendrix in memory of her husband for Urbana High School or Glenelg Country School graduates, with primary preference given to information technology majors, secondary preference to engineering and music majors with consideration given to performing and visual arts students.

 

            The Bonnie Kitchen Hinkle Memorial Scholarship

            Founded by Darl W. Hinkle and Cynthia Hinkle Pickett in memory of their wife and mother for those pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree on a part- or full-time basis, with preference given to Middletown High School graduates majoring in nursing, with secondary preference to students majoring in an allied medical profession.  Scholarships may be renewable pending that the students maintain a 3.0 (B) average or better. 

 

The Robert J. Hogan Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Monocacy Aquatic Club in memory of Robert J. Hogan, parent of a swimmer and longtime supporter of the organization, for graduating seniors studying full-time at a trade or technical school, or a two- or four-year college, and having participated competitively for at least two years with Monocacy Aquatic Club. 

 

            The Hulda E. Holter Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Holter for Brunswick or Middletown High School graduates majoring in nursing or a related field.

 

The Betty Markey Hooper Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Hooper through her bequest and supplemented with memorial contributions for Walkersville High School graduating seniors exhibiting financial need and a commitment to community service.  Preference is given to those attending Hood College and the strong B student.

 

            The U. Mehrl and Margaret T. Hooper Scholarship Fund

            Founded by Mrs. Hooper for those studying at a trade or technical training school. 

 

The J. Wilmer “Pete” and Margaret Holter House Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by some of the House heirs for Middletown High School graduates with preference given to those majoring in agriculture, animal husbandry or a related field. 

 

The Russell Z. and Virginia T. Horman Scholarship

Founded by Virginia Horman for Frederick County residents studying at two- or four- year colleges or universities, or trade or technical schools with preference given to those pursuing careers in agriculture or public service.

 

The James W. Houck Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his parents, Robert and Virginia Houck, with memorial contributions for Brunswick or Warren County (VA) High Schools’ graduating seniors, with preference given to those pursuing a career in the automotive industry. 

 

The Dr. Lawrence C. Hoyer Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Phyllis Hoyer in memory of her husband for students who have attended Frederick Community College and are continuing at a four-year college or university with a 3.0 GPA while majoring in secondary education, applied visual arts, or, preferably, the sciences, with an emphasis in biology, but chemistry or physics will be considered.  Applicants must prove a desire to better their community.

           

The William Hurwitz Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Jeff and Patti Hurwitz in memory of Mr. Hurwitz’s father for Frederick County Public Schools graduating seniors with preference given to students majoring in business.          

 

The Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Darren and Mary Jarvis in memory of their son for Frederick, Urbana and/or Tuscarora High Schools graduating seniors studying forestry, agriculture, land management, veterinary medicine and/or marine biology. 

 

The Candace Gove Kakel Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mary Gove in memory of her daughter for Linganore High School graduates.

 

The Charles E. Keller, III Accounting Scholarship Fund

Founded by the partners of the former Keller Bruner, now RSM McGladrey, in honor of Mr. Keller’s dedication to the accounting profession for recipients in their junior or senior years of college and pursuing a degree in accounting with a minimum 3.25 GPA.

 

The Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 Scholarship Fund

Founded by the Korean War Veterans Chapter 142 for direct bloodline descendants of anyone who actively served in a branch of the United States military, who is eligible for membership in the Korean War Veterans Association and who was not dishonorably discharged. Applicants may be pursuing higher education at a two or four-year college or university, trade or technical school.

 

The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Daniel J. Lajewski in memory of his wife for graduates of Brunswick High School and/or members of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick.

 

The James and Melinda Lautenberger Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. and Mrs. James Lautenberger for those pursuing a career in accounting, health care or one of the physical sciences, with preference given to those studying at Frederick Community College.

 

The Marvin and Bonnie Laws Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Laws for Walkersville High School graduating seniors who will attend Frederick Community College.  The scholarship may be renewed while the student is enrolled at FCC.

 

The William O. Lee, Jr. and Family Endowment Fund

Founded by William O. Lee, Jr. as a recipient of the 2003 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism for residents of the City of Frederick, Maryland, who are graduating high school seniors and who are continuing their education at trade and technical schools, certificate programs, or two- and four- year colleges.

 

The Ralph and Annabelle Lenhart Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Lenhart for students at any point in their post-secondary career, with preference given to those studying in the building trades or at a technical school, or studying agriculture, agronomy, or animal science.  Not for students of automotive technology.

 

The Alan Linton, Jr. Scholarship Fund

Founded by his parents, A. Patrick and Sharon L. Linton, for those who actively participate in their faith, with preference given to finance or economics majors.

 

The M. Rebecca Linton Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Linton for students who are graduating seniors who will attend Frederick Community College, with preference given to accounting majors and students actively participating in golf.

 

The Joseph B. and Dorothy R. Long Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. Long for Frederick or Brunswick High School graduates pursuing a post-secondary education at the institution of their choice, including a trade or technical school. 

The Sandra E. Long Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by the Frederick County 250th Anniversary Steering Committee with revenue generated from the sale of anniversary memorabilia for those studying political science or history at Frederick Community College, Hood College or Mount Saint Mary’s University.

 

The Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship Fund

Founded through Mrs. Main’s bequest to support scholarships for Frederick County residents who demonstrate good character, financial need and academic promise, but do not necessarily have to be in the top tier of their class academically.

 

The Chief Charles V. Main Scholarship Fund

Founded by friends and family in honor of Chief Main’s 90th birthday for those pursuing a career in criminal justice, police work or public safety.

 

The Mary Alice Markey Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Markey’s friends and family in honor of her 90th birthday for those pursuing a four-year degree in education or art.  Scholarship is based primarily upon financial need and is renewable for up to four years if a 2.5 GPA is maintained. 

 

The David G. Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his family and Frederick Aviation for those pursuing a career in the aviation industry with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

 

The Dr. Rex R. and Ann Martin Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. and Mrs. Martin for Frederick High School graduates enrolled at Hood College.

 

The Millard “Mick” Mastrino Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Melvin F. Danner in memory of Mr. Mastrino for Frederick High School graduates with preference given to students who were born in Frederick County, who are members of Evangelical Lutheran Church, located in Frederick, who are affiliated with United Steam Fire Engine Company Number 3, Frederick County Fire and Rescue Service and/or other organized fire and rescue departments within Frederick County, and who are interested in a career in public service, public safety and/or culinary arts.

 

The Robert and Ann Miller Family Fund

Founded by Mrs. Miller for scholarships for agriculture majors with preference given to Middletown High School graduates.

 

The Mary Ann Moschel Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. Robert C. Moschel, in memory of his wife, in collaboration with The Frederick County Association of Counseling and Development for graduating seniors pursuing a degree in counseling, psychology, education or human services.  Scholarship is based upon commitment to pursuing a career in a “people helping” profession, intention to mentor and help others when they become a professional, and academic excellence with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

           

The Jessica Lee Murphy Memorial Fund

Founded by her parents, Don and Sue Murphy, with memorial contributions from family and friends for Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating seniors who excel in sports and academics, exhibit a safe driving record, and are continuing their education at a two-year or four-year college.  Scholarship is based upon participation in varsity sports their senior year, with preference given to volleyball players and those with a safe driving record.  Scholarship may be renewable pending funding.

 

The New Forest Society Scholarship Fund

Founded by The New Forest Society, Inc., for students pursuing careers in the environmental sciences, with preference given to those studying the protection of the environment through conservation of natural resources.

 

The Charles A. and Kathryn Z. Nicodemus Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Nicodemus for Walkersville High School graduating seniors, with preference given to those students attending Hood College.

 

The Roger F. Nicodemus Theatre Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. Nicodemus to provide a renewable 4-year scholarship to support a Frederick County resident attending college who shows an interest and active participation in theater and demonstrates financial need. 

 

The Luster and Jean Oxley Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Oxley for students attending two- or four-year colleges or universities located in Maryland showing financial need, exemplary community service and active participation in a faith-based organization.  Special consideration shall be given to the strong “B” student. 

 

The Nicholas Talarico Paskowsky Memorial Fund

Founded by Jane Talarico and Michael Paskowsky in memory of their son for Frederick High School graduating seniors attending two- or four-year colleges or universities and having a grade point average no greater than 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

 

The Garrett R. Petronchak Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his mother, Peggy Waxter, for graduating seniors who participate in alcohol prevention and education activities with preference given to ATOD-free (alcohol, tobacco and other drug-free) athletes.  Letters of reference from the Drug Free Schools Facilitator, SHOP Sponsor or Alcohol Prevention Sponsor, Substance Abuse Coordinator, or School Official (guidance counselor, principal, class advisor) should be submitted with the application.

 

The Ada B. Poole Scholarship Fund

Founded by an anonymous donor in honor of Mrs. Poole’s positive impact on her students for Walkersville High School graduating seniors with plans to attend a four-year college full time, with preference given to English, literature or education majors.

 

The Lawrence M. and Betty Agatha Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Ms. Powell for Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating seniors who are scholar/athletes pursuing a post secondary education at a college, university, trade or technical school and who participated in a varsity sport during senior year.

 

The Progreso Latino Scholarship Fund

Founded with proceeds from two Frederick events celebrating the Latino heritage for students pursuing post- secondary education within any field with preference given but not limited to applicants of Latino heritage.

 

The Rev. Dr. Rodney B. Pulliam and Rodney II, Jordan, and Matthew Pulliam Memorial Fund

Founded by Tammie A. Pulliam in memory of her husband and sons with memorial contributions for students active in faith-based organizations and involved in their community, with special preference given to those pursuing careers in ministry, law or medicine.

 

The Kay E. Ramsburg Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mary Alice M. Ramsburg and Sharon L. Gregory in memory of their daughter and sister for Frederick County Public Schools graduates majoring in elementary education and/or pursuing a career as a reading specialist.

 

The George E. Randall Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Elizabeth W. C. Randall in memory of her husband for those studying journalism and/or photography.  Preference is given to Catoctin High School graduates attending Frederick Community College.

 

 

The Ramona Corun Remsberg Scholarship Fund

Founded by Ramona C. Remsberg through her estate provisions for those pursuing a career in finance. 

 

The Millard Milburn Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert C. and Elizabeth S. Rice, for those studying at either McDaniel College or University of Maryland at College Park in undergraduate or graduate school programs. 

 

The Barry D. Richardson Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Visual Arts

Founded by Shirley and Kathryn Richardson in memory of their husband and father for students attending Frederick Community College, exhibiting artistic talent, and taking at least nine credit hours, with preference given to visual arts, including art education, art therapy, graphic design, and photography majors. 

 

The Don and Rosa Rippeon Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Rippeon for Walkersville High School graduates with preference given to students majoring in early childhood education, specifically kindergarten through third grade, and agriculture. 

 

The Winfield Scott Rodney, IV, Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. Sonja Rossig in memory of her son for students attending a college, university, or trade or technical school with special consideration given to computer science majors.  Preference is given to those who are striving to become self-sufficient despite disabilities and obstacles they may have, who have completed rehabilitation at the Frederick Rescue Mission and now attending Frederick Community College, and/or who are ages 17 through 22 who are or were involved in foster care, have been diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Diabetes, and/or have disabilities as defined within the Americans With Disabilities Act. 

 

The Michael Schrodel Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by his family and his parents, David and Diana Schrodel, for Walkersville High School graduating seniors, with preference given to football players; however, other student athletes may be considered if no senior football players meet the scholarship criteria.  Scholarships are based upon the ability to take direction from supervisors and coaches, sportsmanship, and the ability to pursue goals on and off the playing field. A reference letter from the athletic coach should be submitted with the application. 

 

The James R. Seek, Jr. Memorial Fund

Founded by Amy J. Seek in memory of her husband for graduates of Frederick, Urbana, and/or Tuscarora High Schools who are strong “B” students.  Scholarships are based upon good character and kindness of spirit.  Special consideration shall be given to students with learning disabilities.

 

The 1Lt. Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Robert and Sandra Seidel in memory of their son for graduates of Catoctin High School with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 who participated in a minimum of one varsity sport during their senior year, exhibit an outstanding community service record, and show active participation in their faith.

 

The C. Eugene Shaff, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Laura Jean Shaff in memory of her husband for Frederick County Public Schools graduates majoring in a scientific field, such as physics, biology or chemistry.  

 

The Alma Crebs Sharrer Scholarship Fund

Founded by Donald W. Shankle for Frederick residents who attended South Frederick/Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Frederick High School majoring in any field.  Scholarship awards shall be based primarily on financial need.

 

The Shiraz Scholarship Fund

Founded by the Memarsadeghi family for full time students attending Frederick Community College or any University of Maryland campus, with preference given but not limited to students of Iranian birth.

 

 

The Gary F. Smith Memorial Music Scholarship Fund

Founded by Jeanne P. Smith in memory of her husband for Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduating seniors majoring in music with primary consideration given to instrumentalists and secondary consideration given to vocalists.   

 

The Mary E. M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship Fund

Founded by bequests from the Smith sisters for students pursuing a degree, with preference given to education majors.  Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of post-secondary education. 

 

The Ross and Pauline Smith Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Smith for students who are attending an accredited college or university but are not necessarily in the top tier of their class academically.

 

The Michael C. Snyder Memorial Fund

Founded by David and Mary Snyder in their son’s memory for students exhibiting financial need with preference given to those studying the visual arts, early childhood education or art education.

 

The Pauline Stauffer Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by George C. Stauffer, G. Douglas Stauffer and Sharon Stauffer Barrick in memory of their wife and mother for Walkersville High School graduating seniors, with preference given to those studying nursing or a related field. 

 

The Julia D. Stine Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Alice Jean Stine in memory of her mother for Brunswick High School graduates enrolled at Salisbury University with at least a “B” average with preference given to education, nursing, psychology, social work, or sociology majors.

 

The Dr. V. E. Gladstone Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Gloria H. Thompson and Sonya D. Thompson in memory of their husband and father for graduate students pursuing dentistry at Howard University Dental School. Preference shall be given to Frederick County residents.

 

The Marvin G. Todd Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Bess Todd in memory of her husband for Brunswick High School graduates who are enrolled in a four-year college or university who received the “B” award while in high school.  Financial need is not necessarily considered for this scholarship. 

 

Tribute to a Friend Scholarship Fund             


Founded by Robert A. Rosensteel with donations from the Emmitsburg area, in memory of David Copenhaver, Greg Hollinger, Tom and Sharon Topper, and Terry Myers for graduating seniors residing in Emmitsburg continuing their education past high school at Mount Saint Mary’s University.

 

The Martha Murphy Virts Nursing Scholarship Fund

Founded by Edgar Virts in his mother’s honor for a student pursuing a degree in nursing with preference given to students at Frederick Community College and/or intending to work in a long-term care facility with persons with dementia and disabilities.  Preference will be given to students beginning at the bottom of the nursing career ladder, such as receiving certification as a geriatric or nursing assistant.

 

The Walkersville High School Alumni Scholarship

Founded by Walkersville High School Alumni Association to provide a scholarship for a graduating senior from Walkersville High School.

 

The Philip I. Winters Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mr. and Mrs. John Winters in memory of their son for Middletown High School graduates, with preference given to education majors maintaining a 3.0 to 3.9 GPA.

 

The Charlie Wood Golf Scholarship Fund

Founded by Mrs. Wood in memory of her husband for students graduating from any Frederick County high school who will attend University of Maryland at College Park and can demonstrate a passion for golf. 

 

The Yellow Springs Lions Club Charitable Fund

Founded by the Yellow Springs Lions Club for Frederick and Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduates demonstrating a commitment to community service and financial need.

 

The R. Edward Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Sandra A. Zimmerman with contributions from friends and family in memory of her husband for Walkersville High School graduating seniors enrolled in a four-year college with preference given to banking, finance or economics majors and to those with a “B” average.
