Hello! We have made it through the first half of term 1. The interim date was 9/24. I will have the interim grades entered by 8:00 on October 1. Last week we finished our unit on Nuclear Chemistry. The test grades will not be entered until later in the week because the test were given after the interim date. This week we start our unit on Matter and Energy. The tentative schedule and objectives are posted below. As always the schedule will be posted at: http://gtjhs.fcps.org/Shields/ShieldsIndex.htm and you can check grades online at http://www.fcps.org/content/pinnacle.cfm.
Objectives: Students will be able to:
à Differentiate between Intensive and Extensive Properties
à Identify Unknown Materials based on the physical and chemical properties and changes
à For a given mixture, determine appropriate separation techniques and identify properties used to separate to include: Filtration, distillation, crystallization, decanting
à Apply the kinetic theory ofmatter by classifying matter as solid, liquid, gas or plasma
à Differentiate between endo and exothermic processes, when given example of each and by generating examples of each
à Students will determine energy transferred during a physical or chemical change by calculating using Q = mcDT, comparing specific heats of metal to water, and performing calculations involving heat of fusion and heat of vaporization.
